Love Hope Strength Foundation

Dina Wolkoff

I’m 42 years old, from Ripton, Vermont, and grew up in St. Paul, MN. I work in development at Middlebury College, my alma mater. When I first learned about Pike’s Peak Rocks from one of my best friends, Julie Silverman Burton (one of MY “rocks”), I was intrigued. As a fundraiser, and one who has worked in several non-profit realms, I am continually heartened by the success of organizations like Love Hope Strength moreso by the people who devote themselves, share their spirits, and oftentimes push their physical limits. Climbing Pike’s Peak to raise money for cancer centers, with a rock concert at the finish? This non-profit, LoveHopeStrength, founded by musicians? So cool. My life has been enriched by musicians and the outdoors. I thought, “I’d love to go out and support Julie and her Mom — but I can’t. I have another trip planned, I’m busy at work, .. etc.”

Julie and I have been friends since we were about 12 years old. Her life and her family has been deeply affected by cancer. Recently, another best friend/”rock” has made some tough and brave choices, as she is a carrier of the breast cancer gene.

My nephew, Peter, who has Down Syndrome, was diagnosed with Leukemia in October 2006 when he was just 3 years old. Half of his life has been about chemo and spinal taps and feeding tubes and hospitals. He is so strong inside and out. FInally, his chemo treatments ended last month. Funny how a little time passing and some twists in the road changes one’s perspective. Turns out, I WILL be climbing Pike’s Peak — and I will do it with Peter in my heart, thankful for the resources he had during his cancer, and the knowledge that I’m doing a small part to help others. I will dedicate my climb to Peter and his sister, Vivian.

I’m signing up with only a month to get ready. It’s been a while since I’ve trained for something this big, like a marathon or a mountain bike race. I will be exploring the Long Trail, Camel’s Hump, Mt. Mansfield, and Mt. Abe here in Vermont — something I’ve longed to do for years – as I get ready for Pike’s Peak Rocks. I hope my knees make it!

I will also be climbing for my Dad, who has Alzheimer’s, and my Mom, a cancer survivor, who completed the Pike’s Peak half marathon 9 years ago and who have both inspired so many people to push themselves beyond their expectations.
