Gadabout [gad-uh-bout] noun: a restless seeker after amusement or social companionship. The word well-describes many of the stumblers in the streets of LoDo on any given night. But this Saturday, March 28th a merry band of very different vagabonds will make an appearance in the sports-bar lined corridor of 20th street.
Boulder-based Ukulele Loki and the Gadabout Orchestra are perhaps as odd a fit as you can imagine for Jackson’s All American Grill, an establishment where the biggest draws are usually hot wings and large-screen plasma TVs. But really, Loki and company are kind of an odd fit for this century- which is a large part of the charm.
Watching the group’s whimsical clamor of banjos, tubas, makeshift percussion instruments and (of course) ukuleles is likely to transport you back to a time that you probably don’t remember but which is part of our collective cultural nostalgia- a time when snake oil cured all, cigarettes were good for you and a well-groomed mustache was a true measure of a man.
All three have fallen out fashion since, but this weekend’s event pays tribute to the facial-hair feature. At the March Mustache Gala, attendees (male and female) are encouraged to show off their finest real or stick-on ‘staches. Loki himself is a member of the elite Hirsute Moustache and Beard Society, but don’t worry- he is not eligible for the contest that evening, so you still have a chance.
The event costs $15 ($20 at the door,) includes one free drink and plenty of hors d’oeuvres and all proceeds benefit the Love Hope Strength Foundation, a music-centric organization that funds cancer centers in impoverished communities all over the world. Doors open at 8 pm at Jackson’s, 1520 20th St. (map.)
