On Saturday August 7th 2010, The Levellers will make a very special live appearance at Rhuddlan Castle Rocks in the village of Rhuddlan, nr. Rhyl, North Wales in support of the Love Hope Strength Cancer Foundation.
This is the first ever acoustic music festival at the historic Rhuddlan Castle and as well as The Levellers there will be additional music appearances from acclaimed singer songwriter Nick Harper, and Love Hope Strength Foundation co-founder Mike Peters (of The Alarm) and more to be announced soon.
Love Hope Strength Foundation is the world’s leading rock and roll cancer foundation and Rhuddlan Castle Rocks is part of their annual Snowdon Rocks event (an annual charity music journey now in it’s fourth year, to the summit of Snowdon – the highest point in England and Wales), which has so far raised well over £120,0000 to help cancer care in North Wales. Funding has been shared between The North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd Hospital (funding helped build the Eira Suite antibody unit), The Alaw Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital (which used it’s funding to buy two Stem Cell Harvest Machines), and hospices at St. Kentigerns, St. David’s and Ty Gobaith.
For further information and to physically take part in Snowdon Rocks IV please visit www.lovehopestrength.co.uk or call Katrina on 07814 404877
Love Hope Strength Foundation will also be hosting a ground breaking Bone Marrow Donor Drive (in conjunction with Anthony Nolan Trust) at the event on Saturday August 7th. LHSF CO-Founder Mike Peters of Welsh rock and roll band The Alarm says, “We will be asking eligible and able bodied members of our community to come forward and put themselves on the Bone Marrow donor list. Being a bone marrow donor in 2010 is a simple, painless and effective way of being a life saver. Together (with the Anthony Nolan Trust), we are hoping to break down the myths surrounding Bone Marrow Donation and show people that the new way to join the register and become a Bone Marrow Donor is as simple as performing a Saliva DNA Sample Test (by spittting into a bottle). If you are fortunate enough to become a lifesaving match then, via a painless blood transfer process, you could be the one to save a life.”
All proceeds from ‘Rhuddlan Castle Rocks’ will go directly to Cancer Care in North Wales, the national health service organisation which diagnosed and successfully treated Mike Peters (a two times cancer survivor) for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) in 2005/06 and Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (1995). Mike Peters is still undergoing long term maintenance treatment at the Alaw Unit, Ysybyty Gwynedd with a view to finding a cure under the watchful eye of Dr. David Edwards who has been Mike’s haemotologist throughout both of his cancer battles. Dr David Edwards said: “Mike’s courage in battling his illness has been remarkable and he is an inspiration to us all. His efforts will mean that crucial research projects can be continued and new equipment can be bought for both cancer units at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd which will allow us to improve patient treatments and facilities still further.”
‘Rhuddlan Castle Rocks’ and it’s parent event ‘Snowdon Rocks IV’ has this year attracted the support of Barclays Bank who are getting behind both events by offering financial support and encouraging staff and customers from within the banking community to get involved and climb the mountain in support of the cancer care initiatives that are being proffered by Love Hope Strength Foundation. Throughout 2010, Mike Peters and members of the LHS team have been lobbying in Parliament with the help of MP’s Chris Ruane (Denbighshire) and Mark Tami (Deeside) to bring the UK into line with other international countries such as Canada and Germany who have progressive policies with regard to Bone Marrow Donors. Mike Peters, Chris Ruane MP, Mark Tami MP and LHSF have been attempting to raise the age of UK Bone Marrow Donors from 45 to 49 to help those in need, to find their lifesaving match. As a result of this endeavour, a major review of the UK’s policy is currently being conducted by Health Minister Gillian Merron with results due to be published in the spring.
