On June 27, 2009; in Colorado Springs, CO. 103 musicians, cancer survivors and supporters came together to hike America’s Mountain, Pikes Peak. Joining the team were Kevin and Michael Bacon (The Bacon Brothers), Cy Curnin (The Fixx) and The White Buffalo. The Bacon Brothers performed a 3 song set at 14,110 feet after hiking the entire mountain for 6 hours. “It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done physically,” said Bacon after the roughly six-hour climb. “I’m in pretty good shape, but it still really kicked my ass.” Cy Curnin of The Fixx hiked also played “Remember Me When I’m Gone” in honor of Farrah Fawcett who lost her battle against anal cancer on the Thursday before the trek. An acoustic set was performed at 13,000 feet by The White Buffalo and at the trailhead by Cy Curnin who kicked off the day with a moving speach about the ripples each team member was about to make in the world of cancer care. The post party celebration was hosted by The Hard Rock Cafe in Denver. $65,000 was raised to support cancer care around the world and the national bone marrow registry.
Pikes Peak rocks gained mass media attention across the globe raising international awareness of the need for more bone marrow registrants and additional support for global cancer care.
