My name is Steven Gustas. I am originally from Buffalo, New York. I grew up one of two sons of parents who worked in the steel mills. I definitely have a “blue collar” mentality which was only reinforced with a 2 year stint in the Army. I believe this mindset carries me through everyday living and applies to anything I do. I embrace life to the fullest and even more so from having seen cancer hit home to four people in my immediate family these past 2 years. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago. She is presently in remission. A couple months after that, my father was told he had small cell lung cancer and would probably live 2-3 years. He only lived 10 months and died this past Dec.1. My dad was a strong man who was reduced to nothing. While my mom and dad worked at the steel plants, the only aunt I ever really knew (my mom’s sister) raised my brother and I. She was a health freak to whom I attribute my healthy lifestyle. She was a major influence in my life. This past year she was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. To top all of this, my step-father has just recovered from prostate cancer surgery.I know I am not unique in this situation and that nobody is immune to these diseases in this cycle of life. We all experience something like this sooner or later. It’s just that mine hit all at once..
I am a sports guy with a love for health, music and mountains and have a passion for people in all walks of life. That’s why “Love, Hope and Strength” has a place in my life. I love what you guys stand for and knowing that many lives can be touched because of this foundation. I’ve seen first hand the effects of cancer. That is why I am so inspired by your organization and to participate in something so meaningful and close to my heart gives me a chance to share and spread positive spirit, energy and motivation with and to others. I want to give back what cancer has taken. With Faith comes Hope.
I am looking forward to Pikes Peak Rocks.
Steven Gustas
