LHS UK Presents Snowdon Rocks IV

The main event of the Love Hope Strength UK year is the Snowdon Rocks event. Now in its 4th year and bigger than ever.

On Saturday August 7th 2010, Mike Peters, the internationally acclaimed singer of Welsh rock and roll band The Alarm will once again host ‘Snowdon Rocks’ for an incredible fourth year running.

For 2010, Snowdon Rocks is also expanding its format to include a first ever concert at the historic Rhuddlan Castle with a very special guest performance by The Levellers and additional appearances from acclaimed singer songwriter, Nick Harper and Mike Peters himself.

Mike Peters is once again calling on all members of the Love Hope Strength / Alarm community who are fit and able, to join him on the mountain for ‘Snowdon Rocks 4’ (Supported by Barclays) on the weekend of August 6th and 7th 2010.

This years event will have an expanded and significantly updated itinerary from previous years and so as well as being able to join in with each event singularly, we are looking for some special LHS participants to take up a special VIP Weekend Trekker Package and pledge a minimum donation of £350 which will be fully inclusive of two nights accommodation at the magnificent Faenol Fawr Country House Hotel. Access All Areas tickets to a special acoustic performance for patients and staff at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre on the evening of August 6th before attending the (Black tie) Love Hope Strength Gala Summer Ball (sponsored by North Wales leading law firm Mackenzie Jones) that very same evening.

Day two will begin early on the morning of Saturday 7th with an escorted coach trip to Snowdonia to climb Mt. Snowdon (with appropriate trek and summit performances from Mike Peters and other renowned LHS supporting musicians). Upon returning to the hotel, you will have a chance to recover from the trek in the hotel Spa prior to attending the Love Hope Strength Acoustic Festival which will be held in association with Barclays Bank inside the walls of the historic Rhuddlan Castle for Rhuddlan Castle Rocks featuring very special guests The Levellers, Nick Harper and Mike Peters, who will be playing acoustic sessions both singularly and collectively in one of Wales most dramatic settings. In Three Years, Snowdon Rocks has so far raised well over £120,0000 which was been shared between The North Wales Cancer Centre at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd (funding helped build the Eira Suite antibody unit), The Alaw Unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd (which used it’s funding to buy two Stem Cell Harvest Machines), and hospices at St. Kentigerns, St. David’s and Ty Gobaith.
In addition Love Hope Strength will be hosting a ground breaking Bone Marrow Donor Drive (in conjunction with Anthony Nolan Trust) at the event on Saturday August 7th. “Throughout ‘Snowdon Rocks 4’, we will be asking eligible and able bodied members of our community to come forward and put themselves on the Bone Marrow donor list. Being a bone marrow donor in 2010 is a simple, painless and effective way of being a life saver thanks to the benefit of recent scientific breakthroughs that have made this a way to give of yourself and help save someone who’s life is under threat from the deadliest forms of cancer. Together (with the Anthony Nolan Trust), we are hoping to break down the myths surrounding Bone Marrow Donation and show people that the new way to join the register and become a Bone Marrow Donor is as simple as performing a Saliva DNA Sample Test (by spittting into a bottle), and if you are fortunate enough to become a lifesaving match then, via a simple and painless blood transfer process, you could be the one to save someone’s life.”

All proceeds from ‘Snowdon Rocks 4’ will go directly to Cancer Care in North Wales, the National Health Service organisation which diagnosed and successfully treated Mike Peters (a two times cancer survivor) for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) in 2005/06 and Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (1995). Mike Peters is still undergoing long term maintenance treatment at the Alaw Unit, Ysybyty Gwynedd with a view to finding a cure under the watchful eye of Dr. David Edwards who has been Mike’s haemotologist throughout both of his cancer battles. Dr David Edwards said: “Mike’s courage in battling his illness has been remarkable and he is an inspiration to us all. His efforts will mean that crucial research projects can be continued and new equipment can be bought for both cancer units at Ysbyty Gwynedd and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd which will allow us to improve patient treatments and facilities still further.”

Due to public demand, ‘Rhondda Rocks II’ (August 14th) is also going ahead for its second year running to benefit cancer care for communities in South Wales. “It is by popular demand that ‘Rhondda Rocks II’ is being staged in South Wales”, says Mike Peters. “Last year’s event was also very successful and I hope that in time, ‘Rhondda Rocks’ will become as huge a success as ‘Snowdon Rocks’ has been for North Wales”.

Snowdon Rocks / Rhondda Rocks has this year attracted the support of Barclays Bank who are getting behind both events by offering financial support and encouraging staff and customers from within the banking community to get involved and climb a mountain in support of the cancer care initiatives that are being proffered by Love Hope Strength Foundation. Throughout 2010, Mike Peters and members of the LHS team have been lobbying in Parliament (with the help of MP’s Chris Ruane (Denbighshire) and Mark Tami (Deeside) to bring the UK into line with other international countries such as Canada and Germany who have progressive policies with regard to Bone Marrow Donors. Mike Peters, Chris Ruane MP, Mark Tami MP and LHSF have been attempting to raise the age of UK Bone Marrow Donors from 45 to 49 to help those in need to find their lifesaving match. As a result of this endeavour, a major review of the UK’s policy is currently being conducted by Health Minister Gillian Merron with results due to be published in the Spring.
